A map can match its Figma frame in one screenshot and fail everywhere else. A long place name covers the action button, a pin sits under a sticky sheet, browser location permission is denied, tiles load late, or a mobile viewport zooms to an unusable region.
Pixelay can compare Figma designs against live, staging, local, or private web pages using overlay, split, and difference views. For map interfaces, useful comparison requires deterministic test places and states; a constantly moving map is not a stable QA target.
Define the location task
First identify what the interface asks the user to do. Common tasks include finding a store, choosing a delivery address, setting a service area, dropping a precise pin, browsing nearby results, or confirming a detected location. Each task needs different evidence and controls.
Document the intended source of truth:
- browser or device location;
- typed address and autocomplete provider;
- saved account address;
- draggable pin coordinates;
- selected search result;
- administrative boundary or service polygon.
Do not treat the formatted address, map centre, and submitted coordinates as interchangeable. A map may appear centred on a building while the saved pin points to a road or neighbouring parcel.
Build deterministic fixtures
Create a QA dataset of stable locations that exercise the design:
- short and very long place names;
- dense city centre and sparse rural area;
- apartment or unit address;
- ambiguous address with multiple results;
- address outside the service area;
- location near the international date line or viewport edge;
- right-to-left or non-Latin address;
- missing street-level precision;
- location with many nearby results.
Store expected labels, coordinates, selection result, and screenshot conditions. Mock provider responses where possible so the same test does not change with live search ranking or map data. If live tiles are required, wait for a documented ready state before capturing comparisons.
This differs from a general date-picker visual QA workflow. Both involve popovers and localisation, but map QA adds geospatial truth, provider tiles, pan and zoom behaviour, permissions, and coordinate precision.
Design and capture the state matrix
Prepare Figma frames for more than the happy path. Include:
- initial empty state;
- permission prompt explanation;
- permission denied and recovery;
- locating and tile-loading states;
- search suggestions open;
- no results and provider error;
- pin selected;
- pin moved but not confirmed;
- out-of-area result;
- multiple nearby markers;
- mobile bottom sheet expanded and collapsed;
- keyboard focus and validation error.
Name frames by state and viewport, then connect each to a reproducible route, fixture, or debug control in the build. Without that mapping, reviewers waste time trying to make the implementation resemble a static mockup through manual panning.
Compare stable layers first
Map imagery can differ because of tile version, pixel density, localisation, or provider branding. Begin with interface layers the product controls: search field, buttons, results, marker treatment, selected state, sheets, attribution clearance, spacing, typography, and responsive positioning.
Use Pixelay’s overlay or difference mode after the map has reached the agreed centre and zoom. If the underlying tiles are nondeterministic, mask or de-emphasise that region and compare the controlled chrome. Then separately validate map semantics: correct pin coordinates, bounds, zoom, service area, and selected result.
The file-upload component QA workflow demonstrates a similar principle: visual comparison becomes useful only after the test fixture and asynchronous state are controlled.
Stress responsive and interaction boundaries
Test narrow phones, landscape phones, tablets, and desktop widths. Check whether controls overlap provider attribution, safe areas, browser UI, or a bottom sheet. Pan and zoom with mouse, touch, trackpad, and keyboard where supported.
Verify that:
- the selected marker remains visible when a sheet opens;
- search results do not escape the viewport;
- long addresses wrap without covering actions;
- marker clusters and labels remain distinguishable;
- zoom controls have usable targets;
- focus indicators are visible over varied tile colours;
- loading indicators do not look like frozen controls;
- map gestures do not trap page scrolling unexpectedly.
Visual parity must not override provider attribution or accessibility requirements. If Figma omits required attribution, the implementation should not remove it just to match.
Test permissions and failure recovery
Location permission differs across browsers and operating systems. Test allow, deny, dismiss, previously blocked, unavailable, timeout, and inaccurate results. Copy should explain how to continue by searching or entering an address manually.
Simulate slow tiles, failed geocoding, rate limits, offline behaviour, and partial provider responses. Confirm that the last valid selection is not silently replaced and that retry actions are clear. A blank grey rectangle is not an acceptable generic error state.
Report differences with location context
A useful defect includes viewport, browser, fixture ID, centre coordinates, zoom level, state, screenshot, and comparison observation. For example:
At 390 × 844 using fixture
outside-zone-02, the expanded bottom sheet covers the selected pin and the “Choose another address” action sits below the safe area.
Separate visual issues from data issues. “Marker is 8 px off the Figma position” is visual; “marker resolves to the wrong entrance” is geospatial or provider logic.
Pixelay makes visual drift objective once the state is reproducible. It cannot confirm that an address is deliverable or that coordinates represent the intended place. Combine controlled visual comparison with location-domain checks, and the map becomes a testable interface rather than a screenshot that happened to look right once.
