Audit logs often expose the product’s internal vocabulary at its worst. Event names come from backend identifiers, actors appear as IDs, objects change names over time, and a row such as “policy.updated” gives an administrator no idea what actually happened.

Define what the log is for
An activity feed, notification center, and compliance audit log are not interchangeable. Decide who reads this surface and what decision they need to make.
An end user may need a friendly history of recent changes. A workspace administrator may investigate access, configuration, or billing. A security team may need precise, exportable evidence. The same underlying event can require different presentation while retaining the same factual record.
This workflow is distinct from a notification center copy review. Notifications prompt attention now. Audit logs help someone reconstruct what happened later, often under stress and with higher expectations for accuracy.
Build an event language inventory
Export the visible strings from representative Figma frames with CopyDoc, then add the actual event taxonomy from product and engineering. Use one row per event type with columns for:
- stable event key;
- user-facing event name;
- actor type and display rule;
- action and tense;
- object type and display rule;
- changed fields or result;
- timestamp format;
- source such as UI, API, integration, or system;
- permission needed to view details;
- empty, redacted, and deleted-object behavior;
- owner and approval status.
Include examples using realistic data. A grammar that works for “Adam renamed Project Alpha” may fail for an automated integration, a deleted user, or a bulk operation affecting 5,000 records.
Write events as answerable statements
A useful row helps the reader answer who did what, to which object, when, and with what result. Not every event needs every detail in the summary, but the missing information should be available in a detail view when policy permits.
Prefer language such as:
Maya changed the workspace role for Jordan from Viewer to Editor.
over:
Permission setting modified.
The first version identifies the actor, target, and change. Do not invent certainty when the system lacks it. If an event came from an API key or automated policy, name that source rather than attributing it to the last human who configured the system.
Choose tense and sentence structure once. Avoid mixing “User deleted,” “has been removed,” and noun labels such as “Deletion” for equivalent events. Consistency makes scanning faster and reduces translation complexity.
Handle identity and object changes safely
Decide how to display users who were deleted, invited but never joined, renamed, or represented only by an email address. Preserve enough historical context for the log to remain meaningful without exposing personal data beyond the viewer’s permissions.
Objects also change. A project renamed today should not make yesterday’s event misleading. Determine whether the log stores the historical display name, current name, stable ID, or a combination. For deleted resources, “Deleted project (ID …)” may be more useful than a blank link.
Security, legal, and privacy owners should define retention, redaction, and export rules. Copy improvements must not leak IP addresses, secret names, personal details, or restricted object metadata to a viewer who could not otherwise access them.
Design the filter language with the events
Event labels, filter names, and exported column headers should share a vocabulary. If the row says “workspace role” but the filter says “membership permission,” the product makes administrators translate its terminology.
Review actor, action, object, date range, source, and outcome filters. Write empty states that distinguish no activity from no results under the selected filters. Explain timezone and date boundaries where they affect investigations.
Test long organization names, service accounts, multiple objects, bulk changes, unknown values, and localized dates. The terminology audit workflow can help when audit events expose conflicting names from several product areas.
Reconcile copy with real event payloads
Figma examples are hypotheses until they are matched to production-shaped data. Review sample payloads for each event family and confirm that every variable required by the approved sentence is reliably available.
Never hide a failed action behind successful language. “Export requested” is different from “Export completed,” and both differ from “Export failed.” Record partial results and batch counts accurately. If the system cannot determine the actor or outcome, use an explicit fallback that does not imply more than the data proves.
Create fixtures for human, system, API, integration, deleted, redacted, bulk, failed, and unknown events. Compare the implemented table, detail view, filters, export, and mobile layout with the approved Figma states.
Use a signoff checklist built for investigations
Before release, verify that every supported event has a stable key and approved label; actor and object fallbacks are defined; tense and terminology are consistent; timestamps and timezones are clear; success, failure, and partial outcomes differ; permissions and redaction have been tested; filters use the same language; and exported records remain understandable outside the interface.
