Raster Logo to Editable Vector Workflow in Figma

A client sends a 600-pixel PNG logo with a white background and asks for a trade-show graphic by Friday. The original Illustrator file is gone, the agency that made it no longer exists, and scaling the PNG makes every edge look soft.

Vectorization can turn the raster image into editable paths, but it does not turn a poor source into an approved master logo automatically. The result still needs visual cleanup, structural decisions, and brand-owner signoff.

This workflow explains how to use Convertify to bring a JPG, PNG, or WebP logo into Figma as scalable vector layers, then turn the result into a practical working asset without pretending that automatic tracing is perfect.

First decide whether recovery is justified

Search before you trace. Ask the client, printer, web team, prior vendors, and internal shared drives for:

• SVG, EPS, AI, or PDF brand files
• A brand-guidelines package
• An existing website header logo
• A vector logo inside a presentation or print document
• One-color and reversed variants

A vector source embedded in an old PDF may be more accurate than tracing a small PNG. If you find an editable source, use the relevant import workflow rather than reconstructing it.

Recovery is appropriate when the best available asset is raster, the logo must be enlarged or recolored, and the organization understands that the result needs approval.

Choose the least damaged raster source

Compare every available copy at 100% zoom. Prefer:

• The largest pixel dimensions
• Clean, high-contrast edges
• No JPEG ringing around letters
• No drop shadow unless it is part of the official mark
• A flat background that is easy to separate
• The least evidence of repeated resizing

Do not assume the largest file in kilobytes is best. A large JPEG may simply contain more compression noise. Likewise, a screenshot of a website header may have been anti-aliased for a specific display size.

If several variants exist, identify which one is the approved primary mark before spending time cleaning it.

Prepare the image for a clearer conversion

Place the source in a dedicated Figma page and keep an untouched copy locked beside the working image. Crop unrelated margins. If the logo sits on a plain background, make sure there is enough contrast between the mark and that background.

Avoid aggressive sharpening. It can create false edge detail that becomes extra vector nodes. Do not redraw small counters or gaps in the raster image before conversion; those changes make it harder to compare the result with the evidence.

Record the original pixel dimensions and where the source came from. That provenance is useful when the recovered asset is reviewed later.

Convert the raster artwork into vector layers

Use Convertify’s image-to-vector capability to turn the selected PNG, JPG, or WebP into scalable SVG layers in Figma. Start with the simplest viable result. A logo does not benefit from thousands of points that reproduce every compression artifact.

After conversion, duplicate the result:

• Keep one copy exactly as generated.
• Use the second copy for cleanup.

This lets you compare every manual change against both the raster reference and the initial conversion.

Automatic conversion is most reliable for flat symbols and bold lettering. Fine gradients, distressed textures, tiny registered marks, and low-resolution type can require manual reconstruction.

Clean geometry without redesigning the logo

Zoom in and inspect:

• Straight edges that became slightly bowed
• Circles that converted into uneven curves
• Corners with clusters of unnecessary points
• Counters inside letters
• Small gaps that closed during tracing
• Shapes that should be symmetrical
• Background rectangles included by mistake

Reduce nodes carefully. Fewer points usually make paths easier to edit, but removing too many can change the silhouette. Use the locked raster as an overlay and switch visibility repeatedly.

Do not “improve” proportions based on personal taste. The task is asset recovery, not a stealth rebrand. If the source contains an apparent inconsistency, flag it for the brand owner rather than quietly correcting it.

Handle lettering as artwork until proven otherwise

Logo text may be custom drawn, modified from a typeface, or spaced in a way that is not reproducible with live text. Do not replace vectorized lettering with a similar font merely because it looks close.

If the exact font and construction are documented, you can rebuild a live-text working version, but keep an outlined delivery mark for dependable output. Compare:

• Character widths
• Kerning pairs
• Baseline alignment
• Custom cuts or terminals
• Relationship between wordmark and symbol

When the text is too damaged to recover confidently, stop and request a better source or approval for professional redrawing.

Build only the variants supported by evidence

Once the primary mark is approved, create practical variants:

• Full-color on light background
• Reversed for dark backgrounds
• One-color dark
• One-color light
• Symbol-only, if officially used

Do not invent a stacked arrangement or remove a tagline just because those variants would be convenient. Use brand guidelines or explicit stakeholder approval.

Test the recovered mark at extremes

A recovered vector should work beyond the artboard where it was cleaned. Test it:

1. At favicon or small UI size, checking that counters stay open.
2. At ordinary website-header size.
3. At large signage size, looking for wobbly curves and uneven joins.
4. In one color.
5. On light and dark backgrounds.
6. Exported as SVG and PDF.

Open the exports outside Figma. Confirm there are no hidden raster fills, masks, background rectangles, or clipping surprises. Ask a printer or production designer to inspect the file if it will be used for physical output.

Recovery handoff notes

Deliver the asset with a short record:

Source: client-supplied PNG, 1200 × 420 px
Recovery: vectorized and manually cleaned in Figma
Approval: approved by [name] on [date]
Known limitation: small registered mark reconstructed from raster reference
Included: full color, reversed, one-color SVG and PDF

This prevents a recovered approximation from becoming an undocumented “official” logo years later.

Before final approval, confirm:

• No better vector source exists.
• The raster reference and provenance are retained.
• Shapes were cleaned without changing the design.
• Lettering matches the available evidence.
• Variants were approved rather than invented.
• Small and large uses were tested.
• External SVG and PDF exports open correctly.
• The brand owner understands the source limitation.
